The office noise dilemma

  • 1 mins

I was fascinated by two graphs that Kyle de Bruin (Managing Director, Leeseman) shared at the Sydney Conference. They showed that even in the best offices, satisfaction with noise levels have plummeted dramatically since the pandemic.... and while some might be tempted to accept an increased frequency of complaints as the unavoidable outcome of return to work and hybrid workplace strategies, given that there is a relationship between noise dissatisfaction and perceived poor performance and productivity, noise levels do need to be addressed.

Data like this, and supported by others in the market, suggests that pre pandemic solutions, like above ceiling acoustic treatments and quiet zones may not adequately address the need. Perhaps wider passageways, increased biophilia and  soundmasking need to be considered in addition to our traditional methods. Its possible that sensors and automation could also be used to manage noise levels in the same way that lighting levels are managed.

Either way, we will need to do more to achieve the same levels of satisfaction with noise levels.
